Bizet’s great opera CARMEN

Opera Hunter is very excited to present Bizet’s great opera  CARMEN, Warners Bay Theatre, July 10 to 21 2024.

Carmen was derided in 1875 for presenting gypsies, smugglers, factory workers and other common people on stage in grand opera.

Bizet died a few months after the premier believing that it was a failure. Tchaikovsky predicted that in ten years Carmen would be the most popular Opera in the world, and he was right!

We are very excited to present Carmen in the original French language with surtitles and spoken dialogue in English.

Christopher Bearman OAM conducts the Lake Macquarie Philharmonic Orchestra. Director Stewart McGowan & Designer Robyn Greenwell are setting the opera in 19th Century Spain.

The design team are taking an innovative approach to evoking the world of this opera. Bizet’s verismo masterpiece continues to speak to us about love, pain, and passion.

We feel the joy and terror of life on the margins.
