Raphael Hudson presents 12 songs by Schubert from Winterreise, and mezzo-soprano Anthea Harrington sings Sea Pictures by Edward Elgar. The accompanist is Mercia Buck.
Raphael and Anthea were sensational leads in Opera Hunter’s Carmen in July 2024.
Schubert’s Winterreise is set to poems by Wilhelm Müller, depicting a man spurned by his lover, moving through the winter landscape in various states of despair, nostalgia, and loneliness.
Elgar’s five songs depict the great English love of the sea in settings of five poets: Roden Noel, Caroline Alice Elgar (his wife), Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Richard Garnett, and Adam Lindsay Gordon. Gentle, spiritual, turbulent, violent, and ultimately nationalistic, these songs are among the greatest of English nationalism, celebrating the proud nation that ruled the oceans.
