Unleash the Darkly Thrilling Tale of Sweeney Todd at Opera Hunter

Opera Hunter proudly presents Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Stephen Sondheim’s dark masterpiece.

Directed and designed by the award-winning Zac Smith, this production features musical direction by Mathew Gallimore, assistant direction by Billy Styles, choreography by Sylvia Martinez, and costume design by Coralie Lewis.

Adapted from Christopher Bond’s 1970 play, which drew inspiration from the Victorian penny dreadful The String of Pearls, Sweeney Todd is a chilling exploration of revenge, greed, and corruption.

The story follows Sweeney Todd, a barber wrongfully transported to Australia by the ruthless Judge Turpin, who coveted Todd’s wife. After years away, Todd returns to London to seek vengeance in a corrupt and unforgiving world. His partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, driven by her infatuation with Todd and a thirst for wealth, fuels his sinister plans with grotesque ingenuity. Meanwhile, Todd’s daughter Johanna, raised by the judge as his ward, finds herself in grave danger as she attracts his unwelcome attention.

Sondheim’s extraordinary score is packed with recurring motifs and themes that weave an intricate musical narrative. From the chilling strains of Dies Irae to Wagnerian style leitmotifs, the music intensifies the drama, drawing the audience into this macabre tale.

The cast includes Jace Pickard as Sweeney Todd, Bridget Glennie as Mrs. Lovett, Archer Nicholas-Canning as Anthony Hope, Maeve Collins as Johanna Barker, Francesco Bertini as Judge Turpin, Dom Lacey as Beadle Bamford, Freddy Hellier as Pirelli, Sam Lane as Tobias Ragg, Maddie Watts as the Beggar Woman, and Aiden Clark as Mr. Fogg.

Prepare for an unforgettable evening of dark humor, thrilling drama, and Sondheim’s iconic music. This is Sweeney Todd as you’ve never experienced it before.
